At least 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio de Janeiro's Most Extensive Security Action on Organized Crime
A minimum of 64 civilians were killed in a police operation cracking down on the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's history.
Four police officers lost their lives during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. More than 80 suspects were taken into custody.
Intense confrontations commenced when approximately 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho responded with shooting, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives stated.
The International human rights organization stated it felt "horrified" by the security action, demanding "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Raid Aftermath
The area of favelas close to Rio's airport is considered to be the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.
State officials stated a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".
Many residents were wounded, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
Local Reaction
Locals have compared the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the operation began.
Roads remain closed throughout the region.
Gang Growth
The criminal network has been increasing their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and control of the hillside favelas.
Security forces reported over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were seized in the mission, together with numerous weapons.
Raid Preparation
The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies follows a year-long investigation.
Many of the individuals are thought to be members of a faction from the Brazilian state who are at the moment taking refuge in Rio de Janeiro.
