A trio of officers perished and at least 15 additional individuals were hurt in an apparently intentional blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The blast occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the residence in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

The three officers killed belonged to the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were arrested at the location and another man who escaped following the blast was located not long after. All three have been admitted to medical facility.

The detonation could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the location revealed the building left as a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto area, the regional head, explained the farmhouse was under an removal notice due to debts incurred by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to engage the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the property. When the officers arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the residents caused the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Commander Papagno stated to the media.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the detonation precisely impacted our personnel,” he added.

Incendiary devices were also located at the residence, the minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the explosion comprised 11 other members of the police force as well as three members of national police and a firefighter.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor thought the explosion had happened on a level above the access point and told reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the explosion, he revealed members had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas canisters being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors told reporters, adding that the trio had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto joined other political leaders in paying tribute to the three men who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
