Celebratory Displays and a Cheer for Life: Israeli Citizens Rejoice at Agreement to Return Hostages
The announcement regarding a deal expected to lead to the freeing captives detained within Gaza for over 24 months has generated delight and relief throughout Israel.
An organization that has advocated for the return of Israeli captives in Gaza voiced “profound gratitude” for what it called an “historic breakthrough”.
The deal—still requiring approved by the Israeli war cabinet—will see the release of 20 hostages alive as well as the remains of 28 dead hostages in exchange for 250 Palestinian detainees imprisoned for life in Israeli prisons and 1,700 detainees from Gaza.
To date, 148 captives have come back—most as part of earlier truce agreements—51 bodies have been retrieved and eight hostages were freed by rescue.
Celebratory Moments at Hostages Square
Joyous gatherings have unfolded in Hostages’ Square in Tel Aviv with crowds of individuals gathered before the agreement’s signing.
The gathering began clapping and dancing under American and Israeli banners—a female attendee holding up a placard that read: “We adore Trump.”
“It’s a magical day,” the woman said.
Another, Yael, aged 50, wept as she watched the crowd dancing.
“I’m very excited—it is such a comfort,” she stated. “We must witness them come back home to their families.”

Relatives Rejoice Using Pyrotechnics

“They’re coming back!... Matan is on his way home!” Einav Zangauker exclaimed as she held her daughter.
Viki Cohen, the mother of captive Israeli Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: “My child, you are coming home.”
The joy could be felt throughout the avenues in Tel Aviv after the news.
Freed Hostages Say Prayers and Raise Glasses
Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari celebrated with another freed hostage Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of gratitude, then cheering “To life”, which means “for life”. She has advocated for the freedom of her companions, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.
Their brother Liran Berman posted: “My Gali and Ziv, I love you so much. You’re coming home.”
Gil Dickman’s cousin Carmel Gat was taken hostage on 7 October 2023, with her remains found in a tunnel in Gaza nearly a year after. He has participated with other hostage families in pushing for an agreement that brings the homecoming of all those still detained in Gaza.
“I can’t quite believe this is actually happening. We’ve been waiting for so long and here it is,” he expressed.
He stated he felt “broken” that Carmel would not be among those returning home yet felt “radiant with happiness” for the relatives of the captives who are finally returning.

Guarded Hope from Relatives
Dalia Cusnir, whose relative by marriage Eitan Horn is still held in Gaza, said she experienced as if she were in “in a dream”.
“We are immensely thankful to the President and all he has accomplished on our behalf. It seems that this could be the beginning of the end of this ordeal, and hugging Eitan feels closer than ever,” she said.
However, she warned that it was still too early to celebrate.
“Until the last hostage returns, we won’t open the bubbly. We will continue struggling... until it’s over,” she affirmed.
“Numerous events might occur up to the final instant which is why we are extremely cautious. We simply wish to express gratitude to all who was involved in the efforts and make sure this agreement is done... We will celebrate only when the last captive is safely home.”
Eitan was taken from kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel together with his sibling Iair, who was freed from detainment through a truce agreement earlier in the year.
