Chicago's MLB Team Sign Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Major $34 Million Contract.

In a significant move for their overhauling roster, the South Side team have signed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a $34 million contract for the high-profile player.

Deal Structure and Incentives

The deal features a $1 million signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, in addition to compensation of $16 million for the next season and seventeen million for the following year.

Notably, Murakami's final-year pay may grow based on award achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for earning the league MVP award.
  • $500,000 for placing second or third in MVP voting.
  • $250K for placing in the top ten.
  • Another $250,000 for being named the top rookie honor.

His deal provides that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his approval and grants him a free agent at the end of the term. Extra provisions include a team-provided interpreter and travel costs between Japan and the U.S..

Posting Fee and Franchise History

As part of the signing, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of roughly $6.58 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's professional league. The Japanese club would also receive a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered salary escalators.

Murakami will become the fourth Japanese to play for the Chicago franchise, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu previously coached Murakami back in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 in February, joins a emerging core of hitters in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth.
