Climate Heating in New England More Rapidly Than the Vast Majority on Earth, Study Finds.
The US region famous for its colonial history, maple syrup and frigid, snow-covered winters is undergoing a swift change. A recent study shows that New England is warming faster than almost anywhere else on the Earth.
Breakneck Pace of Change
The velocity of temperature increase in New England makes it the most rapidly warming area of the contiguous United States, as per the research. The rate of its warming has reportedly accelerated significantly in the last half-decade.
"Temperatures is not only increasing, it's speeding up," explained a primary researcher on the study. "It's really sped up in the past few years, which surprised me. Our regional climate is shifting in a different trajectory, after being relatively stable for thousands of years."
The analysis positions the north-eastern US among the most rapidly heating areas in the world, alongside the polar region and sections of Europe and China. "The region is now moving toward being like the American South," the researcher noted.
Study Approach and Results
For the analysis, researchers analyzed three datasets on daily temperature extremes and snowpack dating back to 1900. The analysis covered the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
They found that New England has warmed by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the global average, with the planet heating by around 1.3 degrees Celsius in the comparable timeframe.
"This represents very fast heating, which is worrying," said the researcher.
Key Climate Trends
- Minimum temperatures are increasing more quickly than daytime temperatures.
- Winters are warming at twice the rate of other seasons.
- The harsh winter chill New England is known for is being reduced.
Oceanic Influences and the "Energy Storage"
A major reason for this exceptional accumulation of heat may be changes in the North Atlantic. The global seas are taking in more than 90% of the excess heat trapped by emissions.
In the north Atlantic, an increase of meltwater from Arctic ice melt is disrupting the Gulf Stream. This is directing heated ocean water into the Gulf of Maine, congregating heat along the shoreline that is then pushed further inland by prevailing winds.
"Surplus thermal energy from climate change is being held in the sea like a massive storage unit," explained the researcher. "This is now being released into the air and New England is a receiver of that heat."
Consequences on Life and Extremes
Once considered a mild climate haven, New England has experienced extreme weather shocks in the past decade, including devastating floods and prolonged dry spells.
The increasing temperatures endangers iconic elements of regional life:
- Maple syrup production is being affected by changing climate conditions.
- Winter sports are impacted; an hockey tournament on frozen lakes has been called off or moved multiple times due to unsafe ice conditions.
- Winter tourism have struggled because of insufficient snow.
"I live just north of Boston and when I arrived in the 1990s I used to skate on the ponds regularly," recalled the researcher. "That sort of thing has largely vanished from large parts of the southern part of the region."
