Heat and Trail Blazers Earn Initial Victories Following Recent Arrests
The Miami Heat recorded 86 first-half points against the Memphis Grizzlies
Miami Heat claimed a crushing 146-114 win over the Memphis Grizzlies in their first NBA game after guard Rozier was detained for alleged illegal sports betting.
Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also detained as part of a broad federal investigation into sports betting. Both men contest the claims.
But, the Miami team were focused as they recorded eighty-six first-half points to lead Memphis by thirty-nine at halftime, the biggest halftime lead in the team's 37-year history.
Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 points and later said Terry had the support of the team.
"We stand behind him. Full support," Bam stated. "You support him through and through. That's our brother at the end of the day."
Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Rozier is a person who is important to all of us. He has made a beneficial influence on our team.
"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he faces this."
The Trail Blazers also secured their initial match after the detentions, with Brazil-born Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' absence and guiding the team to a convincing 139 to 119 win against the Golden State Warriors.
"Everyone experienced great experiences with Chauncey and how he coached," Tiago said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but we have a job to do."
League Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' over Recent Events
Speaking about the arrests for the first time, league head Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and supporters than the fairness of the game," he informed Amazon Prime. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
The commissioner further mentioned an NBA investigation into the player's conduct in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he played for the Charlotte Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the authorities and the gambling firms," he added.
"We investigated that situation and were very transparent regarding it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating from that point. Naturally, what they announced recently was an charge.
"Moreover 30 months after, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in fairness to Rozier.
"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
