The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

A new term surfaced a couple of months into the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, as stated by medical experts such as paediatricians. Normally, it is rare for medical staff to care for a young patient who has been bereaved of their entire family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal about scores of doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.

A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that violations are ongoing. Authorities disputes these allegations, just as it refutes all charges it is implicated in. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, even though several European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, we are told, is what unity looks like.

Eurovision, of course banned Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is treated differently.

A Double Standard

Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that global media are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

The contest turns 70 next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of someone in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. A contest that initially championed peace has now become a cynical way to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
