Three Lions Coach Explains His Approach: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.
Ten years back, Anthony Barry was playing at a lower division club. Today, his attention is fixed supporting Thomas Tuchel claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. His journey from the pitch to the sidelines started as an unpaid coach for Accrington's Under-16s. Barry reflects, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He discovered his calling.
Staggering Ascent
Barry's progression is incredible. Commencing as Paul Cook’s assistant, he built a reputation with creative training and excellent people skills. His stints with teams took him to top European clubs, and he held coaching jobs abroad across multiple countries. He's coached legends including world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, it’s full-time, the top in his words.
“Everything starts with a dream … But I’m a believer that obsession can move mountains. You envision the goal and then you plan: ‘How do we do it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We aim for World Cup victory. But dreams won’t get it done. We have to build a methodical process so we can to maximize our opportunities.”
Obsession with Details
Passion, especially with the smallest details, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours all the time, they both challenge limits. The approach feature mental assessments, a heat-proof game model for the finals abroad, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights the national team spirit and rejects terms including "pause".
“It's not time off or a break,” Barry says. “We had to build something that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”
Driven Leaders
The assistant coach says and the head coach as “very greedy”. “We aim to control every aspect of the game,” Barry affirms. “We seek to command the entire field and we dedicate most of our time to. It’s our job not just to keep up of the trends but to surpass them and set new standards. It’s a constant process to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to clarify complicated matters.
“We have 50 days with the players prior to the World Cup. We must implement an intricate approach that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. We need to progress from thought to data to understanding to action.
“To develop a process that allows us to be productive in that window, it's crucial to employ the entire 500 days we'll have from when we started. During periods without the team, we need to foster connections with them. It's essential to invest time communicating regularly, observing them live, feel them, touch them. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”
Final Qualifiers
Barry is preparing ahead of the concluding matches in the qualifying campaign – against Serbia at Wembley and in Albania. The team has secured a spot in the tournament by winning all six games with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; on the contrary. This is the time to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum.
“We are both certain that the football philosophy ought to embody everything that is good from the top division,” he comments. “The athleticism, the adaptability, the physicality, the integrity. The Three Lions kit needs to be highly competitive yet easy to carry. It must resemble a cloak not protective gear.
“To make it light, we need to provide a system that lets them to operate like they do every week, that feels natural and allows them to take the handbrake off. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.
“There are emotional wins you can get as a coach in the first and final thirds – building from the defense, attacking high up. However, in midfield of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared currently. They understand tactics – defensive shapes. We are focusing to increase tempo in that central area.”
Passion for Progress
Barry’s hunger for improvement is all-consuming. While training for the top coaching badge, he had concerns regarding the final talk, as his cohort contained luminaries including former players. To enhance his abilities, he went into tough situations available to him to practise giving them. Including a prison in Liverpool, and he trained detainees for a training session.
He completed the course as the best in his year, with his thesis – The Undervalued Set Piece, in which he examined numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard included won over and he hired Barry on to his staff at Stamford Bridge. When Frank was fired, it spoke volumes that the team dismissed most of his staff except Barry.
His replacement at Stamford Bridge became Tuchel, within months, he and Barry won the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued under Graham Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he recruited Barry of Chelsea and back alongside him. The Football Association see them as a double act akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
