In a decisive final ballot, hardline politician José Antonio Kast has won the presidential office in Chile.
A Commanding Win
With more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the ballots, overcoming leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third bid for the presidency, having earlier been defeated by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Platform Built On Security and Migration
Noted for his staunch Catholic views and praise for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was largely focused on promises to address growing insecurity and significantly curb immigration.
He consistently blamed migrants, especially the around 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the campaign, he gave an stern warning for them to leave before the new term begins or face expulsion.

Despite his decisive electoral triumph, Kast does not hold an clear majority in Congress, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even if various rightwing parties are combined together.
This political landscape might hinder his plans, such as a vow to slash public spending by billions within 18 months—a proposal for which he has not provided a clear explanation.
"There are many things about how a Kast presidency will be that we don't know because he has not detailed the way he will implement them," said a political science analyst.
The analyst added, "Regarding fiscal matters, it is very likely we will see austerity policies associated with the right. But where there is much less doubt is on security policy, because that has been his central theme during the race."
