UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a girl containing several human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct personas, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Based on revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips show the main character navigating a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers where their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one standing could be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
