Why Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Trust' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a teenage creates club a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.
During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a quarter-final berth.
Aged 18 years old, the midfielder became the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy
The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.
He signed for Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and determination he added to the team.
'His Best Attribute Is His Character'
During the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during pre-season.
Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I started playing football, every day you go to train and each day you have a game," stated the player after his debut.
"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."
Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.
Pitarch has taken it with performances that have defied his youth and inexperience.
"He is a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and movement."
Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.
"His greatest quality is his character," added he. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand people are astonished to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
