Scorching conditions and raging wildfires have devastated the dry landscape of Western Australia. As mercury levels expected to persist soaring above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a severe alert for extreme heat has been issued across much of the southwestern region.

These conditions follow this month's bushfires in New South Wales, which resulted in the destruction of homes and loss of life. Intense heat alerts have also been activated for the coming days in parts of SA and New South Wales, as a system of high pressure moves to the east, bringing blazing heat to a broad swath of the area.

The combination of extremely dry land and relentless high temperatures creates a volatile situation for emergency crews.

Worldwide Climatic Events Trigger Disruption

In another part of the world, a metropolis was plunged into blackout recently after powerful winds damaged the urban electrical network, with falling trees bringing down power lines. The weather conditions also led to significant transport delays at a major airport, where numerous air services were cancelled. Severe damage to power systems is anticipated to create further problems as service providers scramble to reconnect electricity to more than 1 million inhabitants.

Unusual Fog Blankets Typically Clear Area

Meanwhile, a region famed for its clear skies and plentiful sunshine has experienced one of its dullest and foggiest periods on record. A particular form of fog, which typically lingers for only a short time, has been unusually extensive and long-lasting this year, holding temperatures at a major airport under 8C for more than a week – the most prolonged period in over three decades. The extended fog has been driven by unprecedented autumn precipitation that resulted in the ground saturated.

Severe Weather Brings Snow to Holiday Destination
